Seoul: The government unveiled a package of measures on May 28 Wednesday for improving its emergency response system to better cope with national disasters following last month's ferry sinking that claimed the lives of nearly 300 people.
The measures, among other things, call for empowering fire station chiefs to command emergency rescue operations, giving safety inspection official’s special judicial powers and creating a national safety agency. The package is a follow-up to President Park Geun-hye's decision last week to reorganize the government to better deal with future disaster situations. |
