Phuket: Ambulance sirens wailed across Phuket on May 21 as their crews took part in an emergency exercise carried out by in the province along the Andaman Coast. The exercise was based on a scenario that involved a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal passing close and causing a storm surge along Thailand’s coastline.
Local people, school children, officials, communications experts, rescue workers and heavy machinery operators combined to practice protecting the lives and property of both residents and tourists, and saving victims of the surge. To add to the reality of the scenario, reports came in on tour boats colliding in heavy waves, with 2 tourists washed overboard and in danger of drowning.
The rescuers managed successfully to pull them all out of the water and take them to hospital. |
