First Aid Center sued

A 24-year-old man surnamed Zhao died from severe craniocerebral injury in March 2012; his parents sued the Beijing Red Cross Emergency Rescue Center (999) for preventing Zhao from receiving timely treatment. The couple sought compensation of about 900,000 Yuan ($148,490), the Legal Mirror reported.

The rescue center said they had warned the family that Zhao's situation could deteriorate and was possibly life-threatening, but Zhao's family insisted on taking him home and refused to let him be transferred to the hospital.

According to the certifying institution, the rescue center was at fault but not directly responsible for Zhao's death. The court thus ruled that the rescue center return the 300 Yuan medical treatment fee and compensate Zhao's family in the amount of 30,000 Yuan. The complainants' other claims were rejected.
