Mumbai: The state's dream emergency medical services project, a fleet of 937 state-of-the-art ambulances, will be manned exclusively by ayurvedic practitioners and not paramedics. The state has defended the move, saying that having qualified doctors on board will make the services better. The Rs 1,000 crore project, which was conceptualised after the serial train blasts in 2006, will be implemented this November.
The ayurvedic doctors will undergo a 15-day extensive training programme to operate the equipments such as ECG machines that will be present in the ambulances. They will also be trained to perform emergency procedures such as CPR and stopping excessive bleeding to save the patient.
