Dial 103 for Traffic Emergencies

Guwahati: The spiraling traffic violations and accidents on the streets of Guwahati have cost many human lives and traffic police are constantly trying to update themselves to deal with modern-day challenges. As part of their latest initiatives, they have decided to launch a dedicated phone number - 103 - to deal promptly with traffic emergencies in the Kamrup (Metro) district area.

"After the 24-hour facility is introduced in the city, traffic police will be able to deal with emergencies faster. The department has also taken up steps to train people to deal with traffic emergencies. Pedestrians are usually the first to respond to road accidents and if they are trained to handle accident victims till emergency services arrive at the spot, many lives can be saved," said traffic superintendent of police Bibekananda Das.

More than 1,000 road accidents occurred here between January 2012 and March 2013. At least 311 people have died in these accidents and another 1,350 suffered injuries.
