Philippines: Rescue5 Teaches Disaster Preparedness to Kids Affected by Bohol Quake


Manila: Dipatlong Primary School in Maribojoc, Bohol was heavily damaged by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the province last October 15, 2013. To help schoolchildren of Dipatlong Primary School and 9 more public elementary schools in Maribojoc prepare for earthquakes, storm surges and other disasters, Rescue5, the Emergency Response Unit of TV5 News and Information (News5), gave them copies of its specialized activity book on disaster preparedness in Sinugbuanong Binisaya, the mother tongue in Bohol.

Philippines: MMDA Chief Opens Rescue warehouse


Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino led the opening of the warehouse for rescue and disaster in Marikina City last Jun 27.\r\nTolentino assured that the equipment used for emergency response is protected in the warehouse since its location in Bgy. Tanong is a flood free area\r\nThe MMDA chief added that the warehouse will also be the centralized dispatch area where rescue personnel from the public safety division will be fielded so they will be deployed easily to areas that need immediate assistance available in case of disaster.\r\n \r\n

Philippines: National Simultaneous Earthquake Drills Escalate to Private Schools in Ozamiz


Ozamin City: The National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) conducted on July 2, by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), here, has escalated in selected private schools of the city.\r\nThese schools included the La Salle University (LSU), Misamis University (MU), Misamis Union High School (HS), Medina Science HS/Grade School, Misamis Institute of Technology (MIT) HS and Our Lady of Triumph Institute of Technology (OLTIT).

Philippines: Volunteer Rescuers to get Benefits


The Cebu City Government will start providing all recognized volunteer emergency responders in the city with accident insurance benefits.\r\nThe Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC) will set aside P1 million, charged to the calamity fund, as an initial fund for the program, whose appropriation the CCDRRMC has approved. The program was attended by different emergency response units in the City. A motorcade showcased the City’s response vehicles and equipment. The City has 450 emergency responders from different units and teams from the barangays.

Philippines: SouthCot Launches Disaster Management Training Program for Barangays


General Santos City: South Cotabato has launched an intensive training program on disaster mitigation and preparedness for its barangay disaster action teams (BDAT) to strengthen its disaster management systems.\r\nRamon Ponce de Leon, South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head, said the initiative aims improve the capability of the province’s 199 BDATs to properly respond to potential disasters that might hit their areas. He said they initially launched the training in barangays that have been identified as high risk areas and highly prone to natural calamities or disasters.
