Korea (South): Emergency Numbers to Be Merged
Several emergency numbers will likely be merged into a single number so as to make the whole system more efficient in the wake of the ferry disaster in April. Currently, there are 13 such numbers, including 119 (fire), 112 (crimes), 122 (accidents at sea) and 130 (drug-related). When the Sewol sank, over 20 passengers called 119 to report the situation but no one dialed 122, leading to slow responses from the Korea Coast Guard.

Korea (South): Disaster-Response Robot Nets South Korean Team $2m Prize
Pomona, California, USA: A South Korean team has won a 3-year U.S. contest to create a robot capable of helping in disaster response conditions that are unsafe for humans.\r\nTeam Kaist of Daejeon took home $2 million in prize money for its DRC-Hubo robot after the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals ended Saturday (June 06) in Pomona, California. The contest by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency started after the 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, where workers couldn’t vent hydrogen from the overloaded reactors without enduring excess radiation. The 23 international teams’ robots were timed while navigat
