Pune: Though the Medical Council of India (MCI) had made emergency medicine a specialty in 2009, the country needs at least 10,000 emergency specialists. This was revealed by Dr Pravin Aggarwal, head of the department of emergency medicine in AIIMS, New Delhi, on August 8 Thursday.
Addressing a press meet to announce the launch of full-time training programme in emergency medicine at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune, from September 1, he said currently 19 medical colleges in the country produce 37 emergency specialists. Dr Prasad Rajhans, chief intensivist, Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital and past president of Society of Emergency Medicine said the requirement of the emergency specialists cannot be fulfilled by the government alone. Private hospitals must take the initiative to start such training programmes. The hospital is the first one to launch the Membership of the Academic College of Emergency Experts, a two-and-half-year programme after MBBS.
Emergency Medicine is emerging as an independent specialty and is rapidly expanding. |
