Philippines: Village Execs Get Emergency Training

Chairman Francis Tolentino of the Metro Manila Development Authority said new village executives will be trained on emergency response. He said the barangay’s disaster preparedness formed the frontline in dealing with calamities at the grassroots level. Most of the newly elected barangay officials have no experience on disaster and risk reduction management, he said. According to Tolentino, trained barangay officials would be the force multiplier of MMDA volunteers and personnel, he said. Tolentino said training is set to start in December, giving priority to villages located in low lying areas, near waterways and faultiness.

Philippines: NDRRMC Chief Admits: We're not Prepared for 'Yolanda' Damage

Manila: A week after Super Typhoon Yolanda lashed the country, the executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) admitted that the government is unprepared for the scale of devastation left by this year's most powerful tropical cyclone. Compared to previous incidents such as the Zamboanga City standoff, Del Rosario said Yolanda's devastation covers a bi

Tacloban:  Japan’s emergency medical team has started full-fledged activities in Tacloban in the central area of the typhoon-hit Philippines. “The degree of damage is worse than we expected,” said Dr. Joji Tomioka, deputy head of Japan’s disaster relief team. “For a disaster of this scale, the whole of Japan has to provide assistance.” Treatment for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the city, located on the island of Leyte, has been disrupted by damage to medical institutions by the powerful typhoon. Overseas emergency medical teams have been slow to arrive at the remote location and concerns linger over

Philippines: Preparing for Disasters

The Philippines’ geographical location makes it vulnerable to all sorts of disasters—typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Central Visayas last month was just the latest in a series of disasters that the country had to grapple with in recent years. Memories on the devastation of typhoon Pablo in December last year, or of the massive flooding on the wake of Typhoon Ondoy and Habagat are still fresh in the minds of most Filipinos, particularly those who were living in areas that were badly affected by these calamities. Yolanda, a super typhoon, has left thousands of people dead in the V
