Korea (North): President Park asks Cabinet for Ideas on Emergency Response System


President Park Geun-hye, who is soon expected to apologize to the nation for the government's failure to prevent the recent ferry disaster, continued discussing related matters with her Cabinet on May 13 Tuesday. Referring to similar discussions she had with senior secretaries over the weekend, President Park asked Cabinet members for their ideas on laying the groundwork for a national emergency response system. After apologizing directly to the people, the president will give details of a new master plan to bolster national safety and a new ministry to oversee emergency response and management.

Korea (North): Park Vows Emergency System Reform in S.Korea


South Korean President Park Geun-hye made an official apology once again for one of the country's deadliest maritime disaster on May19 Monday, vowing a reform in officialdom. Park said the coast guard's rescue operations actually failed in the ferry sinking accident, noting that after much contemplation, she reached a conclusion that the coast guard will be disbanded. Korea (North): Emergency Hotlines to Be Rationalized This Year


Some 20 emergency hotlines will be merged into three numbers next year -- 112 (crimes), 119 (disaster and rescue), 110 (other matters), the Ministry of Public Safety and Security announced on 27 January. \r\nThe measure had been discussed since June last year in the wake of the deadly ferry disaster and aims to make the whole system more efficient.

Korea (South): Are You Ready for an Emergency? Learn Now Class is Available


A thorough emergency management preparedness class is available for anyone who wants to learn more about preparing for and responding to emergencies. The class is being put on through Webster County CERT, or Community Emergency Response Team, and those who attend can choose to join CERT if interested, or just take the class for personal knowledge. The class will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 26; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4. It will be at the Webster County 911 Center. Korea (South): South Korea Uses Video Collaboration Tools for Disaster Management


The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South Korea, has deployed video collaboration solutions to improve communication and collaboration among its teams throughout the country. NEMA, the first independent disaster management government authority in South Korea, has emergency response teams in 17 cities and provinces in the country. The video solutions deployed by the agency will allow these teams to talk and share content through video sessions. The system allows any number of teams to join the video call, accelerating decision-making and information sharing during crises.
