Top Medic Warns Against Rubbernecking

Dubai: Motorists approaching a road accident can be curious, to a point, but should be cautious and remember to quickly scan surroundings before driving past, a senior official at Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services (DCAS) said.

Neil Kirby, DCAS director of operations, said it is important for motorists to slow down in the event of an accident but only in case there are people or obstructions on the road. He stressed this should be done without distracting the driver and taking their eyes off the road for a long time.

“Driving a motor vehicle on a busy road with busy activity requires full attention,” Kirby said. “And anything that takes that attention away increases the risk of an accident. Five seconds — to look at something for five seconds is a long time. A lot can happen in five seconds. And if you slow down, other people are looking [at the same accident] and that’s when an accident is likely to occur.”
