Efforts On to Reduce Deaths Among Pregnant Women


Hyderabad: In India 56,000 pregnant woman die due to complications every year or a shocking one every 10 minutes, according to available statistics. What are the main reasons for this high death rate?

According to the findings of a pilot project, women die due to delay in seeking care, during transfer to a health centre with better facilities, inability of health centre to provide services due to lack of blood storage, skilled health professionals or availability of drugs.

The project under the Maternal Death Review Programme was implemented in 2 districts of Rajasthan; Sikar and Jhunjunu. The unique initiative has been launched by the Federation of Obstetric &Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the International Federation of Gynaecology& Obstetrics. (FIGO).
