Snakebite Patients Increasing? Anti-Venom Stock Running Out

Taulihawa: Snakebite cases have increased in Kapilvastu. As per district hospital data, a total of 103 snakebite patients have been treated at the hospital in the past one month or so. During the same period last year, only 57 patients had visited the hospital. Hospital sources reported the death of three patients this year due to delay in reaching the health facility.

Pawan Kurmi, 6, of Dumra, Anita Pande of Bhalwad and Kunti Pasi lost their lives as they could not receive treatment in time. It has been learnt that most snakebite patients visiting the hospital are kids ranging from 3 to 14 years, women and elderly persons. “Sometimes even four to five patients visit the hospital in a single day,” said Senior AHW Subas Gupta, in-charge of the hospital’s emergency ward.

Meanwhile, lack of anti-venom has created difficulty in treating snakebite patients. District health office Chief Dr Ananta Sharma said, “As we are short of medicine here, we refer patients to Bhairahawa and Butwal,” he said, adding that his office had reported the problem to the concerned authorities.
