KaigaPower Plant to get Disaster Response Force

Panaji: In a bid to avert public fear and mistrust surrounding nuclear power plants, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will depute a 35-member State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at the Kaiga nuclear power plant (NPP) near Karwar, around 22 km from Goa.

The SDRF will comprise trained police personnel and will act as the first responder in emergency situations, while also functioning asPR machinery to build confidence in the people living within a 16 km radius of the sprawling power plant.

The move comes after the central government directed the NDMAto work towards 'world-class preparedness' with regards to nuclear power plants to deal with disasters like nuclear crisis caused by Japan's damaged Fukushima power plant.
