Dealing with Snakebites, a Medical Emergency


Kathmandu: Snakebites are rampant in tropical areas and every year many people die of it. The Tarai region of Nepal is one of the endemic regions for snakebites. Due to increasing temperature and the monsoon, snakebites are seen in the Valley too. Therefore, Dr Niraj Bam, Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine at Tribhuwan University Teaching hospital (TUTH) discusses the symptoms and other issues related to snakebites.

“Cobras, vipers (Hariyo), and krait are the snakes mostly found in Nepal and all of these are venomous. Every year many people die due to serpent attack. So, everyone must be cautious,” he said.
