Researchers Discover First-aid for Defective Mucus


Mucus found in our mouths, stomachs and eyes, forms a protective layer that prevents friction and keeps foreign bodies out. Mucins is the main components of mucus, which bind water molecules. But, if these mucins are damaged, they lose this ability. A group of researchers, led by Professor Oliver Lieleg at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has now discovered a means to rebuild defective mucins.
