Living on Narmada banks, Banking on Boat Ambulance

Indore: Till recently, in case of medical emergencies, people depended only on God\\\'s mercy in about 50 villages situated on southern banks of Narmada River. Scattered in 200km long riverbed along Barwani, Dhar and Alirajpur, these villages are totally cut off from the civilized society in absence of proper roads and any proper transportation facility.

But no more situation remains same for them, all thanks to the boat ambulance, which now offers medical care at their doorsteps. Boat ambulance remains equipped with a minor operation theatre, oxygen cylinders and also a cold storage for life saving drugs. It can travel even in 2-3 feet deep water. It also has a telephone connection, which serves as a helpline. In case of emergency, the boat can travel as fast as 30 km/hour. Medical staff and doctors on river ambulance provide consultation, treatment, and dressing of wounds and conduct minor operations. If required, river ambulance also carries patients to particular points from where they can be taken to a hospital through road.
